Special Education Program and Services:
Bridgman Public Schools offers students a full-inclusion co-taught education model with Resource Room Supports. In the core-content areas of English, Mathematics, Science and Social Studies the delivery of curriculum is facilitated through a co-teaching model between the general education teacher and a special education teacher or special education para-professional. In addition to the inclusion co-taught model, students are offered a Resource Room as a part of their instructional day. All students at Bridgman Public Schools are receiving instruction in the appropriate grade level curriculum leading them towards a high school diploma.
The IEP Team and the IEP process determines the appropriate aids, supplementary services, accommodations, and modifications for success in the grade level curriculum. Ancillary services are available for students who qualify. These services may include speech-language therapy, occupational therapy and physical therapy.
Specialized Programs for Students:
Some students need programs that are not offered within the district. The IEP process is used to make this determination and to place these students in programs that offer the services necessary to meet their goals and objectives. Transportation is provided for these students. These programs include:
Blossomland Learning Center (Berrien RESA): This program serves students with moderate and severe cognitive impairments.
Lighthouse Education Center (Berrien RESA) and Niles Southside School (Niles): These programs serve students with severe emotional impairments. Lighthouse also has classrooms for students with Autism Spectrum Disorder.
Niles Southside Pre-Vocational Program (Niles): This program serves students ages 16 – 25 with mild cognitive impairments.
Early Childhood Developmental Delay (St.Joseph/Niles): This half day preschool program serves students from age 3 – 5 who have been qualified for special education services.
Specialized classrooms operated by local districts: Various districts within the county offer programs for students with Autism Spectrum Disorder, mild cognitive impairments, and emotional impairments. The IEP team determines if one of these programs are the appropriate placement based upon student need.
Early On and Project Find: Berrien RESA operates programs to provide information and services to families. Early On focuses on children from birth to two years of age.
